Oura Ring Sleep Report for Your Doctor
Your Oura Ring records sleep data every night. Here is how to turn that data into a printable summary you can bring to your next appointment.
Note: Oura Ring is not a medical device. The information on this page is not medical advice. Always consult your healthcare provider about how to use wearable data in your care.
What Your Oura Ring Tracks While You Sleep
Every night, your Oura Ring records several sleep-related data points. Here is what it captures:
Total sleep time. How long you slept each night, tracked continuously so you can see patterns over weeks.
Sleep stages. Time spent in deep sleep, REM sleep, and light sleep, estimated from motion and heart rate signals.
Sleep efficiency. The percentage of time in bed that you were actually asleep.
Sleep latency. How long it took you to fall asleep after getting into bed.
Heart rate and HRV. Resting heart rate and heart rate variability measured throughout the night via optical sensors.
Breathing rate and disturbance index. Respiratory rate during sleep and a breathing disturbance index based on movement and heart rate patterns.
Skin temperature. Nightly deviations from your personal temperature baseline.

Get startedOura Ring vs Polysomnography
Polysomnography (PSG) is the clinical standard for diagnosing sleep disorders. It uses EEG, EMG, and EOG sensors in a lab setting. Oura Ring uses photoplethysmography (PPG), accelerometry, and skin temperature from your finger. They measure different things in different ways.
| Polysomnography | Oura Ring | |
|---|---|---|
| Sensors | EEG, EMG, EOG, SpO2, airflow | PPG, accelerometer, temperature |
| Sleep staging | Clinical standard (manual scoring by technician) | Estimated from motion and heart rate signals |
| Environment | Clinical sleep lab | Your own bed |
| Duration | 1-2 nights | Every night, continuously |
| Cost | $1,000-$3,000+ (insurance varies) | $349 one-time (ring purchase) |
| What it can do | Diagnose sleep apnea, narcolepsy, parasomnias | Track nightly sleep patterns over time |
| Prescription needed | Yes | No |
Oura Ring cannot diagnose sleep disorders. It records your nightly sleep patterns so you have data to share with your doctor, who can decide whether further testing is appropriate.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Oura Ring a medical device?
No. The Oura Ring is a consumer wearable, not an FDA-cleared medical device. It records sleep, heart rate, HRV, SpO2, and other metrics continuously, but it cannot diagnose conditions. Your doctor can decide whether and how to use the data.
Can this report replace a sleep study?
No. A polysomnography study uses EEG, EMG, EOG, and airflow sensors that a finger-worn device cannot replicate. An Oura-based report shows your nightly sleep patterns over time. Your doctor can decide if a formal sleep study is needed.
How much data should I include in my report?
More nights give a more complete picture. Our reports use up to 59 days of data (the maximum Oura allows via their API). Your doctor can tell you how much context they need.
Is the report free?
Yes. Simple Wearable Report is completely free. Connect your Oura Ring, sync your data, and generate as many reports as you need.
